PHILADELPHIA, PA – As Philadelphia prepares for the 2026 Semiquincentennial, the Northeast Philadelphia Chinese Association (NEPCA) and The Welcoming Center have officially launched a collaborative initiative to foster unity in one of the city’s most diverse regions. Using the "Breaking Bread, Breaking Barriers" (4B) model, the program brings together native-born and foreign-born residents to build community through shared meals and cross-cultural dialogue.
The partnership kicked off its Northeast dinner series on February 4th at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Oxford Circle. The event saw a diverse assembly of volunteers, service partners, and residents from various professional and educational backgrounds gathered to share food and personal stories.
"To build a safe and engaging community, we need to learn to reach out and embrace other ethnic groups," said Mingchu Pearl Huynh, President of NEPCA. "Stepping out of our comfort zones is the only way to replace misunderstanding and discrimination with genuine connection."
The 4B program is part of a citywide effort spanning seven Philadelphia neighborhoods with high immigrant populations. By facilitating these communal dinners, NEPCA and its partners aim to ensure that the 250th anniversary of the United States is marked by a spirit of inclusion and neighborhood solidarity.
"What better way to unify the people than through food?" added NEPCA volunteer Henry Huynh. Attendees left the event with more than just a full stomach; they gained new perspectives and a deeper understanding of their neighbors—the core mission of the 2026 initiative.
About NEPCA: The Northeast Philadelphia Chinese Association (NEPCA) is dedicated to community advocacy and fostering integration for Chinese residents while building bridges across all ethnic groups in Northeast Philadelphia.
