NEPCA Winter  2024 Charity Project Summary NEPCA Volunteer Team December 30, 2024 As the snowflakes began to fall, marking the start of winter 2024, NEPCA volunteers took action to bring joy and warmth to those in need in our community. While this season is often associated with joy, reunions, and gift-giving, many individuals face it alone or without the resources to celebrate. Driven by love and compassion, our volunteers delivered gifts to seniors in care homes, homeless individuals, and children from low-income families. These gifts were more than just material support—they carried heartfelt good wishes from our volunteers. We believe that love, like a seed, takes root and grows in the hearts of those who receive it, fostering hope within our communities. This year’s charity activities included three key initiatives: distributing 2,000 toys, 90 winter care packages for the Philadelphia Protestant Home seniors, and Whosoever Gospel Mission homeless shelter. Reported by Melanie Huynh, NEPCA volunteer, 11/19/2024 This is the fifth time that The Northeast Philadelphia Chinese Association (NEPCA) has hosted a free SAT Prep Class for low-income students and volunteers in the Northeast Philadelphia area. In addition to SAT preparation, these students are given opportunities to actively engage in civic education and community services. On 11/16/2024, after regular SAT class, there was a special presentation by Stephanie Sun , Vice President of the League of Women Voters in Pennsylvania and former Executive Director of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs (GACAPAA). She discussed the history of restrictive laws that have targeted Asian communities in the U.S., including the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Page Act of 1875 , which barred Chinese immigration, and exclusionary clauses in state constitutions on Asian immigrant property ownership. Castor Ave Improvement Project Meeting             Solis Cohen School, 7001 Horrocks Street 10/10/24 On 10/10/2024, Jared Solomon hosted a town hall with PennDOT and SEPTA, and the contractor hired to design the Castor Ave Improvement Project to give the latest update on the project design.  Residents concerned about how the traffic lanes are reduced may cause traffic congestion, and the length of the construction may impact local businesses and residents. They attended this meeting to get an update and give input.
