This email serves to remind you to register if you have not already done so.

The Office of Immigrant Affairs (OIA) is pleased host an in person OIA convening during Immigrant Heritage Month on Wednesday, June 26th at 4pm!

Last Thursday, June 13, 2024, The Pew Charitable Trusts officially released the first of a series of reports about immigrants and immigration in Philadelphia. They will join the Office of Immigrant Affairs and Esperanza next week to review the highlights of this report and then I will moderate a panel of local immigrant leaders to help add texture to the report findings.

Our panelists are:

Mingchu Pearl Huynh, Founder, President & Project Director at Northeast Philadelphia Chinese Association (NEPCA). Born to Chinese parents in Vietnam, her immigration journey to the U.S. shaped her commitment to service, empowerment and providing resources to marginalized communities. She works closely with non-English speaking, low-income Chinese immigrants in Northeast Philadelphia, assisting them to overcome language barriers and receive equitable community resources. She has mobilized hundreds of Chinese families into volunteering to support local community services. She is a key stakeholder for local, state, and federal elected officials in the area and many services organizations, helping to facilitate outreach to the Chinese community. Pearl's works have been covered in the New York times, Philadelphia Daily Inquirer, Philadelphia Magazine and more.

Arianne Bracho Hernández, Executive Director at Madre Tierra Philly, a nonprofit organization that promotes a life free of violence and guarantees gender equality through comprehensive care, awareness, training, information, education, and prevention programs. Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, her mission is to educate women about their rights, spread the culture of gender equality and eliminate violence against Hispanic women in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Inquirer named her one of the ten most influential Latinos in Philadelphia, and she was recently elected to the PhillyCam Board and recognized by Women Against Abuse as Advocacy Champion Award 2024.

Madusu Jabateh Sumaoro, the first female President of the Liberian Mandingo Association of Pennsylvania (LIMAP), is a passionate advocate for community development and women's empowerment. During her inaugural address, she emphasized unity, peace, and reconciliation within the immigrant community. Madusu's leadership aims to establish a multi-purpose community center that accommodates youth and women's initiatives. LIMAP, a 501C3 organization, promotes the social, cultural, political, and educational interests of Liberian Mandingos in Pennsylvania and beyond.
